Trail Description

The Trout Creek Canyon trail in Helena National Forest is an easy family-friendly hike located near Helena Montana.

The hike up Trout Creek Canyon starts out on a flat easy trail and crosses trout creek shortly into the hike. You will see the canyon rock formations soon into the hike which are spectacular to take in on their own. The rock formations really are the highlight of this hike. We were lucky enough to see mountain goats on them during our visit in less than a mile into our hike. The trail is relatively flat and easy, mostly zig-zagging up the canyon making it great for all ages. As you get further down the trail, we noticed the trail was lusher with more spruce trees and lichen hanging off them. The end of the trail has an old wooden gate. Beyond the gate, you can head left to an open field. This field has a good view looking back on Trout Creek Canyon (see the last picture in the slideshow). The other direction seems to follow Trout Creek which we didn’t explore further.
