NOTE: Technically there is a trailhead 1 mile from the lakes – however, it is not passable by cars. You would need a robust 4×4.
The Brannan Lakes trail in the Tobacco Root Mountains starts out ascending up a rather steep road. There are not too many views during the hike except seeing the surrounding mountains poking through the trees. Once you get to the actual trailhead – it is only a .5 mile hike up to Sailor Lake. You proceed towards the east side of Sailor Lake and follow an obvious trail up to Brannan Lakes. Outstanding views all around. I would recommend hiking a loop clockwise around Brannan Lakes. Fun to watch fish dart around in the lakes, and lots of elk tracks.
